Polarized photography has been an art form for over a century now. It uses polarizing filters to darken skies, control exposure and block light from certain angles to make a shot more appealing and to help achieve various looks during video editing.
Sony has been a leader in this industry for some time now and has recently come out with the Sony XCG-CP510 which is the best piece of tech available for polarized photography.
Polarizing Photography with Pixel Integration
In September of 2018, Sony launched the IMX-250MZR, which was the industry’s first image sensor that integrated polarization functionality at the pixel level. It allowed filtering light at the 0, 45, 90 and 135-degree angles, and covered all four planes.
A lot of camera manufacturers subsequently showed their offerings based on the sensor in the 2018 VISION show in November of that year.
The XCG-CP510 is a camera that incorporates the hardware integration of the IMX-250MZR sensor at the pixel level and uses monochrome quad polarizing filters that capture light four planes.
It boasts a resolution of 2448×2049 with a total frame rate of 23 fps. It supports GigE Vision 1.2/2.0 and is made available with an exclusive polarized camera Software Development Kit, which enables simplified and quick development of polarized light apps.
The SDK and the camera are well suited to visibility and detection of several scenes and excel at scratch detection, object detection removal, and enhancement.
The features include:
- Area Gain
- Advanced Image Processing
- Defect Pixel Correction
- Trigger Mode
The Applications Include:
- Scratch Inspection
- Surface Inspection
- Reflection/Removal Enhancement
- 3D Reconstruction

Design
The looks deceptively simple but contains some of the most advanced technology available today within its casing. It is working on the cutting edge of polarized photography and demonstrates some of the best photography on the planet.
The highly sensitive Pregius Global Shutter CMOS sensor allows it to capture the best scenes and the most fleeting of details that you want to preserve inside a picture.
If given the option no one should think twice to choose the Sony XCG-CP510 over any of its competitors. With the release of this camera, Sony has yet again set the new precedent for other cameras to beat.
